  • The U.S. economy contracted at a steeper-than-expected pace in the first quarter, weighed down by sharp declines in exports and business inventories, according to government data that showed the economy was still deep in recession

  • The U.S. central bank chopped the benchmark overnight federal funds rate to a zero to 0.25 percent range in December and appears certain to hold it there, keeping rates exceptionally low for an extended period, and to use all available tools in its campaign to combat the painful recession and paralyzing credit crunch.

     

  • Unemployment rates rose in all of the nation's largest metropolitan areas for the third straight month in March, with Indiana's Elkhart-Goshen once again logging the biggest gain.
